The Macallan 12 Year Old Sherry Oak is the cornerstone of the distillery’s core range, matured exclusively in hand-picked sherry seasoned oak casks from Jerez, Spain. That exclusive sherry-cask maturation gives it a rich natural colour and a full, spice-driven character with dried fruit at its core — no colouring or shortcuts, just twelve years in wood chosen specifically for richness and complexity. Bottled at 43% ABV, it remains one of the most recognised and consistently well-regarded single malts in the world.

Heritage & Detailing

Founded in 1824 at Easter Elchies on the banks of the River Spey, The Macallan is one of the most collected names in single malt Scotch, built on a longstanding commitment to sherry-seasoned oak as the defining influence on its whisky. The distillery sources its own oak casks directly and has them seasoned with sherry in Jerez de la Frontera before they ever touch spirit — a practice The Macallan credits as “the single greatest contributor to the quality, flavours and distinctive aromas” of its whisky.

The Sherry Oak range is the purest expression of that philosophy, built entirely around 100% sherry-seasoned casks rather than a mix of wood types. The 12 Year Old is the entry point into that range and remains the benchmark by which Macallan’s rich, dried-fruit-driven house style is best known worldwide.

Tasting Notes

Rich, spiced and full of dried fruit character — booze-soaked raisins and stewed fruit alongside festive baking spice, with dark chocolate and orange on the palate and a long, dry, peppery finish.
